Treading Lightly- Attaining Potent and Efficient Locomotion
On the surface, walking seems obviously easy. The familiarity makes it automatic, and our body goes on autopilot as we unconsciously move throughout the world. However, many of us have developed unconscious movement habits that don’t serve us, zap us of your energy, and ultimately begin to degrade out bodies.
In this class, we will break down all the components involved in walking. We’ll explore the motor plan and the chain of motion through the skeleton. We’ll discover the ideal path of action through the body. You’ll begin to evaluate the tempo and rhythms and whether you have a clear foundation of support. In short, you’ll cultivate a curiosity about how you do the things you do. Through this awareness, you’ll discover aspects of your gait that are likely inefficient, could be creating discomfort and were hidden in plain sight.
If you begin to ask yourself some questions, you might start to realize there are some opportunities to refine your movements.
How long should your stride be? What part of your foot should you land on?
Do you feel tension, achiness, or pain in your back, hip, or knee after going for a walk, run, or hike?
Do you have challenges with pronation (foot rolls in), supination (foot rolls out), or pain in your foot?
How equally distributed is the movement through the whole of yourself? Does your whole spine rotate with the swing of your legs, or do you hold your torso rigid?
Are you having trouble with balance, especially when the ground isn’t level?
In our schooling, nobody ever taught us how to walk. We just figured it out to the best of our ability, but with no deliberate practice. To make it to the professional level in almost any activity, one needs 10,000 hours of deliberate practice. That is the time our brains need to assimilate the complexity of movements to achieve mastery. Expert performers are produced through years of practice, not born.
This series will cultivate a higher level of self-awareness regarding how you organize and move through your body. Each lesson is tailored to hit the following goals:
You’ll learn how to protect your joints and back.
Unlock the upper body to be available to allow the forces to spiral up and through the spine rather than jamming or sheering across the low back
Develop embodied awareness and curiosity by asking questions to facilitate graceful and elegant movement.
Understand the motor chain of movement to bring coordination, ease, power, and stability to your movement.
Refine your balance, stability, pacing, and tempo
We’ll discuss the shape of the foot and where and how you should transfer weight through it
We’ll explore pronation and supination and find the optimal movement through the foot.
